Brandon Rich Poetry

Spread the love

Brandon Rich is a poet & writer currently based in New Orleans, though he’s more likely referring to the East Coast whenever he mentions a place called home. This collection is his first to see the light of day, but he is planning to set free some more stories very soon.

The Pretty Lights

Is that a light at the end of the tunnel?
Or just another neon laser?

Mac

Coffee shops,
are a lot like orchards,
in the way that they are
so plentiful with apples,
except there, they are
glowing,
lustrous,
expensive,
but yet,
not quite as valuable

When the High Wears Off

dull, muted colors that
are embraced by stagnant and unhopeful air,
exuberance, and elation, and excitement
are all absent
and I wonder aloud to myself and,
quietly to the room that never used to be empty,
is this how depression feels?
or,
have I just woken up sober?

Home of the Brave

America
Is it the land of the free or,
the land of the free-wheeling,
freeway rides taken
through a forest of billboards
make less of an eyesore
than, say,
wind-turbines

but, hey—
was capitalism ever about good optics?

and America,
how about those hobos,
standing like chapels on every corner intersection,
hands outstretched like an usher
with a cardboard collection basket,
and an equally as disapproving look,
listening for those sweet
catholic bells of jingling change,
apparently less of a nuisance
than maybe,
affordable housing

though,
has capitalism ever had a good ring?

Dreams

Dreams don’t just disappear,
ignoring dreams
or forgetting dreams,
is not like losing your house key,
or neglecting to return mom’s fourth phone call,
no,
dreams are not just shaken off
like crumbs from a lap,
laying on the floor
until your next sweep,

no,
it takes some real,
meditated effort
to snub a dream,

see,
dreams don’t just dissolve into nothing
like a pot set too long to boil,

dreams are not that easy to disregard,

maybe it’s because they have made a business
out of selling them,
or maybe it’s because
everyone is starting to follow them
